After graduating from Harvard, she applied to seven art schools, but was rejected by all. Madrid premiered Echelmans 1.78 Madrid, a new sculpture that explores the cycles of time. Interestingly, Echelman never studied sculpture, engineering or architecture. It definitely took a village of several disciplines to create 1.78: architecture, urban design, urban planning, stress analysis, textile development, lighting design, structural engineering, and computer science. With each passing second, the fiber layers of 1.78 bellow and undulate, choreographed by the changing wind and weather, which according to Echelman transforms 1.78 from “an object you look at, into an experience you can get lost in.”Ĭreating Echelman’s aerial sculptures isn’t easy and Echelman has called their creation a team sport. The piece is the latest addition in her Earthtime series, which has been installed in Madrid, Dubai, Mexico City and Beijing, and was commissioned as part of the hotel’s ambitious Art in. Inspired by this shift in the rotation of earth, 1.78, an aerial sculpture in Janet Echelman’s Earthtime Series, connects us to the natural world, and suggests that if the earth’s rotation is not fixed, our system of measuring time cannot be fixed either. In fact, Earth’s rotation is constantly shifting and has slowed down about 6 hours in the past 2740 years, meaning that our 24-hour day has lengthened by about 1.78 milliseconds over the course of a century. American fiber artist Janet Echelman's newest work Earthtime 1.26 was installed in Munich. But Earth isn’t as predictable as we thought according to the Royal Society of London. Scientists can predict occurrences of sunrises, sunsets, eclipses, and phases of the moon. We tend to think that Earth runs like clockwork.
